Saint-Étienne Suffers Heavy 3-0 Defeat at Guingamp in Ligue 2
Despite dominating possession, the league leaders fell hard on the road and saw their advantage shrink to just a single point.
AS Saint-Étienne suffered its second defeat of the season on Saturday evening, falling 3-0 to a clinical Guingamp side at the Stade Roudourou during the 11th round of the Ligue 2 championship. Despite controlling 65 percent of possession and registering 18 shots compared to Guingamp's 10, Ian Cathro's squad was undone by defensive miscues and a lack of cutting edge in the final third.
The visitors entered the match riding a three-match winning streak without conceding a goal and looked to cement their position at the top of the table. However, early technical approximations from players such as Sohaib Naïr, playing against his former club, and Aron Csongvai signaled a difficult night ahead for the leaders.
Saint-Étienne nearly drew first blood in the 28th minute when Jakob Breum curled a dangerous strike off the outside of the post past goalkeeper Ortola. It marked the fifth time this season that the visitors struck the woodwork. Shortly after, the game was temporarily halted following a head-to-head collision between Naïr and Hemia, though both players continued without serious injury.
Guingamp made the visitors pay for their missed chances in the 37th minute. Launched in deep by Hemia, Ben Brahim beat Julien Le Cardinal down the left flank and pulled the ball back to Stanislas Kielt, who slid a right-footed shot between the legs of goalkeeper Mamour Ndiaye to break the deadlock. At halftime, Saint-Étienne trailed in a league match by two goals for the first time all season, prompting manager Ian Cathro to make a triple substitution.
The tactical adjustments failed to spark a comeback. Just five minutes into the second half, Teddy Andami Averlant caught Ndiaye off guard with a brilliant floating strike from more than 25 yards out, doubling Guingamp's lead to 2-0. Saint-Étienne tried to respond through Irvin Cardona and Ben Old, but their finishing lacked precision.
Late in the game, Guingamp put the result beyond doubt. Substitute Amadou Samoura made an immediate impact upon entering the pitch, collecting a deep pass and lobbing Ndiaye with a delicate chip at the far post in the 86th minute to cap off the 3-0 victory.
Reflecting on the first half at the break, Aron Csongvai acknowledged the challenge to beIN Sports, stating, 'It is a difficult match, we are facing a good team that is well organized. We knew it was going to be tough. Guingamp plays very good football. I think we also managed to create chances, we could have scored. They could have scored more as well. We need to step it up, we have the potential to do it.'
Despite the heavy setback, Saint-Étienne remains at the top of the Ligue 2 standings with 25 points. However, their cushion at the summit has evaporated as Montpellier secured a 3-0 victory away at Annecy earlier in the day, narrowing the gap to just a single point. Meanwhile, Guingamp climbed to 14 points following their second consecutive win.
