AS Nancy-Lorraine Claims Second Place in Ligue 2 After Defeating Laval
Zakaria Fdaouch scored the decisive goal to secure a fourth consecutive victory for Nancy against the league's bottom-placed team.
AS Nancy-Lorraine provisionally climbed to second place in the Ligue 2 standings on Friday evening following a hard-fought 1-0 victory against last-placed Laval during the tenth matchday of the season. The crucial breakthrough at Stade Marcel-Picot arrived in the 68th minute when substitute Zakaria Fdaouch converted a crossed shot after receiving a pass from Ilyes Housni.
The narrow triumph marked the fourth consecutive win for Nancy, bringing the club to within three points of league leaders Saint-Étienne ahead of their weekend fixture against Nantes. With this latest success, Nancy temporarily surpassed Montpellier and the Red Star, whose upcoming clash was postponed to Monday, as well as Reims.
Despite entering the match as the clear favorite against a struggling Laval side that had secured only a single victory since mid-August, Nancy faced a resilient defensive block. The hosts dominated large stretches of possession but had to wait until the second half for Fdaouch, who entered the match after the break, to capitalize on their attacking pressure and seal the three points.
Laval remains rooted to the bottom of the table, struggling to find momentum despite implementing tactical adjustments ahead of the fixture. Head coach David Vignes noted after the game that defensive improvements ultimately depend on individual execution within the system. "The change in system was made to reassure the defensive line, but we still conceded a goal, which proves it essentially comes down to the players and how they animate the system," Vignes stated.
On the visiting side, discipline also proved costly during a tense encounter that featured several cautions. Players such as Teddy Bouriaud, Esteban Mouton, William Bianda, and Trévis Dago received yellow cards during a first half marked by intense physical battles. Laval attempted to respond by introducing attacking substitutes Abou Kanté and Oumar Konaté in the second half, but the visiting attack failed to break through Nancy's defense.
Elsewhere across the Ligue 2 multiplex, several other clubs shifted positions in the upper and lower halves of the table. Pau achieved a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Grenoble, moving within a single point of the podium after goals from Hacene Benali and Lorenzo Rajot overturned an early deficit. Annecy secured a 3-1 away win against Sochaux, driven by a brace from Moïse Sahi Dion, while Guingamp defeated Clermont 2-0 thanks to two quick goals from Samir Ben Brahim.
