The Football Club of Metz experienced a difficult night on Friday, October 30, 2026, falling 3-1 to Pau FC during the 11th round of the Ligue 2 season at St. Symphorien stadium. Despite entering the match as a contender for promotion following their relegation from the top flight last year, the home team turned in a lackluster performance that leaves them struggling in the middle of the table.

Pau FC capitalized on defensive vulnerabilities to secure their fifth consecutive victory in the league. The visitors took the lead early in the match when Fall scored in the 11th minute. Although Metz goalkeeper Jonathan Fischer kept his side afloat by stopping a subsequent penalty kick, Pau extended their lead in the second half.

Fall struck again in the 64th minute to double the advantage, and teammate Benali added a third goal just four minutes later to put the match out of reach. Metz managed to respond through veteran playmaker Téji Savanier, who converted a penalty in the 75th minute, but the late effort was not enough to spark a comeback.

The defeat marked the first time this season that Metz lost a home fixture, compounding a frustrating start under head coach Grégory Proment. Speaking after the final whistle, Proment did not hide his frustration over the team's recurring errors, describing the defensive performance as unacceptable and lamenting the preventable goals conceded.

Compounding the offensive struggles for Metz was the absence of their leading goalscorer, Pape Moussa Fall, who had to withdraw from the squad shortly before kickoff due to a family bereavement. Without their primary attacking weapon, the Maroons lacked the sharpness needed to trouble the visiting defense for the majority of the game.

With this latest setback, FC Metz sits in ninth place in the Ligue 2 standings, holding a record of three wins, five draws, and three losses after eleven matches. The growing gap between their current form and the automatic promotion spots has begun to concern supporters who expected a more dominant campaign in the second tier.

Meanwhile, the victory propels Pau FC upward in the standings, continuing a remarkable turnaround under manager Thierry Debès after a slow start to the season. The Béarnais squad now looks firmly established in the upper echelon of the league as autumn matches progress toward the winter break.
