Marseille Holds Off Late Le Havre Comeback to Secure 4-3 Victory in Ligue 1
Bruno Genesio's side nearly squandered a four-goal lead before surviving a frantic finish at the Vélodrome.
Olympique de Marseille secured its third consecutive Ligue 1 victory on Sunday, defeating Le Havre 4-3 at the Vélodrome after a turbulent conclusion to the match. Marseille dominated the first three-quarters of the game, building a commanding 4-0 lead by the 55th minute, only to experience a dramatic collapse that allowed the visitors to claw back three goals in less than fifteen minutes.
The hosts opened the scoring early when CJ Egan-Riley headed home a cross from Emerson in the fifth minute. Timothy Weah doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, driving through a passive Le Havre defense to score while wearing the captain's armband. Coming out strong in the second half, Igor Paixao added a third goal in the 50th minute, followed shortly by Himad Abdelli, who struck a half-volley into the top corner to make it 4-0.
However, the match took a shocking turn as Le Havre mounted an aggressive comeback. Substitute Josh Maja converted a penalty in the 77th minute after Weah was penalized for a shirt pull. Lamine Ndiaye then scored with a header in the 86th minute, and Maja added his second goal with another header just three minutes later, narrowing the deficit to 4-3 and leaving the Vélodrome in disbelief.
Panic nearly cost Marseille the match entirely deep into stoppage time when a ball struck midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi on the hand inside the penalty box. Referee Clément Turpin reviewed the incident on the video assistant referee monitor and ultimately decided not to award a penalty, allowing Marseille to escape with the narrow win.
Following the match, Marseille manager Bruno Genesio expressed both relief and frustration over his team's late-game vulnerability. Genesio joked in his post-match press conference that he had lost a bit of life expectancy during the final minutes, emphasizing that the team's struggles stemmed from a lack of humility after taking a comfortable lead.
Genesio also directed criticism toward his younger substitutes, noting that players entering the game under such circumstances must maintain respect for the opposition and the institution. The manager stressed that the final fifteen minutes must serve as a serious learning experience for the squad.
On the visiting side, Le Havre manager Didier Digard voiced strong frustration with the officiating, particularly concerning the decision not to award a penalty for the late handball appeal. Despite the disappointment of the final result, the performance highlighted the resilience of a Le Havre side that continues to battle at the bottom of the league standings.
With the hard-fought three points, Marseille improved its standing in Ligue 1 ahead of an upcoming match against Toulouse. The team sits in eighth place, closing the gap on the European qualification spots, though the dramatic finish exposed lingering defensive fragility.
