OGC Nice Defeats Stade Brestois 2-1 in Ligue 1 Opener
Goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf went from goat to hero as Nice secured its first away victory of the season at Stade Francis-Le Blé.
OGC Nice secured a dramatic 2-1 victory against Stade Brestois on Friday evening at Stade Francis-Le Blé in the opening fixture of the eighth matchday of Ligue 1. The visiting side overcame an early deficit and a major defensive error to claim their first away win of the season, vaulting past their opponents in the league standings.
The match began disastrously for Nice goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf. In the 15th minute, Diouf committed a costly error during a clearance attempt, allowing Brest striker Ludovic Ajorque to intercept the ball and easily finish into an empty net to open the scoring. The goal marked Ajorque's third of the campaign and gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Despite trailing at the break, Nice responded with increased intensity in the second period. Elye Wahi equalized in the 61st minute by sneaking in at the back post to convert a curling corner kick delivered by Mohamed Amoura. The visitors continued to press forward, and substitute Sofiane Diop completed the comeback in the 83rd minute by intercepting a ball from Bradley Locko and firing a precise, crossed shot past the goalkeeper.
The closing moments of the encounter provided immense drama. In stoppage time, Brest was awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the area. Kenny Lala stepped up to take the spot-kick for the hosts, but Diouf redeemed himself for his first-half blunder by diving to stop the shot and preserve Nice's narrow lead until the final whistle.
Prior to kickoff, both teams paused to honor the late Eric Roy, the former Brest coach who passed away earlier in the summer. Captains Hugo Magnetti of Brest and Axel Witsel of Nice wore special armbands featuring photographs of Roy, while visiting supporters unfurled a tribute banner, and Nice officials presented a signed jersey to the new Brest coaching staff.
With the win, Nice climbed to the eighth position in the Ligue 1 table with 11 points, collecting their first success away from home after three consecutive losses on the road. Meanwhile, Stade Brestois saw their recent two-match unbeaten run come to an end, dropping to 11th place with 9 points.
