Perth Glory Secures Victory Over Wellington Phoenix in A-League Women
Early goals from Emma Tovar and Rola Badawiya propelled Perth Glory to a 2-0 home win and second place in the standings.
Perth Glory climbed to second place in the Ninja A-League Women standings following a 2-0 home victory over last season's runners-up, Wellington Phoenix, at HBF Park. First-half goals from midfielder Emma Tovar and forward Rola Badawiya secured the three points, extending the team's unbeaten start to the campaign and earning their third consecutive clean sheet under coach Stephen Peters.
The hosts made an immediate impact when Tovar finished off a sweeping team move just five minutes into the match, slotting the ball into the bottom corner after being played into the box by Susan Phonsongkham. The early breakthrough followed a narrow scare in the opening three minutes when Wellington's Makala Woods fired just over the crossbar.
As the first half progressed, both sides engaged in a physical midfield battle that limited clear-cut scoring opportunities. However, just before the halftime whistle, Perth doubled its advantage. Phonsongkham delivered a corner kick from the left that the Phoenix defense failed to clear, allowing Badawiya to capitalize and head the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Wellington applied concerted pressure during the second half as they sought a way back into the match. The visitors created several moments of danger, including a strong penalty appeal after Baxter Thew appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area, and a late effort from Indiah-Paige Riley that sailed narrowly wide of the target.
Despite the sustained pressure from the visitors, Perth's defense held firm. The home side nearly added a third goal late in the contest when substitute Bronte Trew was sent racing through on goal, only for her shot to be tipped over the crossbar by Wellington goalkeeper Victoria Esson.
The victory moves Perth Glory upward in the league table following earlier results in the season, which included a scoreless draw against Adelaide United. The team will look to maintain its strong momentum when they return to HBF Park next Saturday to face Canberra United.
