A-League Officials Acknowledge Blunder Amid Wellington Phoenix Victory
Match officials admitted to a major officiating error during Wellington Phoenix's win over the Newcastle Jets, while maintaining the final scoring decision was correct.
A-League match officials acknowledged a significant error occurred during Wellington Phoenix's 3-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets, even as they defended the ultimate ruling on the field. The controversy emerged during Saturday evening's fixture at McDonald Jones Stadium, where the visiting Wellington side secured their third consecutive win to start a season for the first time in club history.
The focal point of the dispute was Corban Piper's opening goal for the Phoenix in the 14th minute. Piper initially saw an offside flag raised by assistant referee Liam Smith during the attacking sequence, but play was allowed to continue by the main referee, and the striker subsequently put the ball into the back of the net. Following a review, the VAR overturned the initial concern, confirming Piper was onside.
The situation sparked intense frustration from Newcastle players and staff, who argued that the premature raising of the assistant referee's flag should have automatically halted play. Paramount+ sideline reporter Ben Homer spoke with the fourth official and later received clarification from Jon Moss, Football Australia's Head of Referees.
According to Moss, the error stemmed from the assistant referee's lack of familiarity with VAR protocols. "He said to me that this referee, Liam Smith, it’s his first A-League game, he has been refereeing NPL and Australian Championship. They’re used to flagging for offside, they’re not used to VAR," Homer reported during the broadcast, noting that officials admitted to a massive blunder regarding the flag itself.
Despite the procedural mistake, experts and officials maintained that the outcome on the pitch was accurate. Under current guidelines, if a referee does not blow the whistle after a premature flag, play continues. Former A-League striker and co-commentator Roy O_Donovan supported the final decision, stating that the referee made the right call by allowing the play to proceed.
The victory extended Wellington's historic start to the campaign, keeping them at the top of the table. Following Piper's opening strike, the visitors withstood significant pressure from the Jets before sealing the match with late goals from substitutes Riley Bidois and Nathan Walker in the 87th and 94th minutes.
The loss compounded a difficult stretch for the Newcastle Jets, who remain winless across all competitions this season. Despite strong efforts, including an Alex Grant clearance off the line and a save by Phoenix goalkeeper Henry Gray against Xavier Bertoncello, Newcastle was unable to overcome the deficit as mounting frustrations highlighted the competitive tension of the A-League Men season.
