BVB Managing Director Carsten Cramer Discusses Financial Gap with Bayern
Despite a multi-million euro net loss in the past fiscal year, Borussia Dortmund remains confident in keeping its squad together and denies any pressure to sell.
Following a hard-fought 2-2 draw between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern Munich, BVB Managing Director Carsten Cramer addressed the stark financial disparities between the two German clubs. Speaking on a television sports program, Cramer acknowledged the immense advantage held by Munich, noting that their lead has been earned through the hard work of multiple generations rather than being handed to them.
Cramer also pointed to the involvement of entrepreneur Max Viessmann with FC Bayern as a positive signal for German soccer as a whole. While recognizing that a club's likelihood of athletic success is tied to its financial resources, the 57-year-old executive emphasized that this reality should not serve as a permanent excuse for Dortmund.
The financial context surrounding Borussia Dortmund includes a newly reported group net loss of 21.7 million euros for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. This follows a profit of 6.7 million euros recorded by the publicly traded club during the previous year.
Despite these financial figures, Cramer expressed strong optimism regarding the club's roster stability. He stated that he is very confident the team will be able to keep its current squad intact during the upcoming summer transfer window, stressing that the club is financially healthy and not forced into regular player sales.
While player sales are not the primary objective, Cramer did not completely rule out future transactions if attractive economic opportunities arise. He reiterated that Dortmund's core philosophy remains centered on developing young talent and helping players improve, even if that means accepting that not every professional will finish their career with the club.
Looking ahead to the winter transfer window, Cramer kept options open, explaining that the current squad is already very well positioned while maintaining that the club is fully capable of acting should the need arise. Meanwhile, FC Bayern prepares for an upcoming Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid amidst significant injury concerns following their recent draw with Dortmund.
