MLS Playoff Race Intensifies as Regular Season Nears Final Stretch
Teams across the Eastern and Western Conferences battle for remaining postseason berths and crucial seeding positions.
The Major League Soccer regular season is reaching its final phase with only two matches remaining for clubs across the league. The postseason picture is coming down to the wire as teams fight for the last remaining playoff berths and advantageous seeding ahead of Decision Day.
In the Eastern Conference, six teams have already secured their playoff spots. Among them is Chicago Fire FC, which recently strengthened its position in the standings following a victory over the Colorado Rapids. The win placed Chicago firmly in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 55 points, sitting just one point behind Inter Miami, though Inter Miami holds matches in hand.
Chicago Fire FC is guaranteed to finish the regular season no lower than fifth place and no higher than third. Meanwhile, other Eastern Conference clubs such as Orlando City SC, FC Cincinnati, and the Columbus Crew are still locked in a tight battle to clinch the remaining postseason tickets before the final games.
Over in the Western Conference, the playoff race is similarly competitive. Six teams have already punched their tickets to the postseason, while another six squads remain mathematically alive in the hunt. Teams like the Colorado Rapids, Seattle Sounders, and Real Salt Lake face intricate scenarios involving wins, losses, and goal differentials to secure their qualification.
The format for the postseason features 18 total teams qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs, with the top nine finishers from each conference advancing. The eighth- and ninth-place finishers in each conference will compete in single-elimination wild-card matches scheduled for mid-November.
Following the wild-card round, the top seven seeds will move on to the Round 1 best-of-three series. The postseason will then progress through single-elimination conference semifinals and finals, ultimately culminating in the championship match for the MLS Cup.
