New Zealand Defeats India in Fifth T20I at Seddon Park
Glenn Phillips and Tim Seifert led New Zealand to a seven-wicket victory over India in Hamilton.
New Zealand secured an impressive seven-wicket victory over India in the fifth and final T20I of the series at Seddon Park on Sunday. A strong batting performance from Tim Seifert and record-breaker Glenn Phillips guided the hosts to successfully chase down a target of 192.
The chase faced an early setback when New Zealand lost opening batsman Finn Allen in the second over. Arshdeep Singh dismissed the Kiwi opener, catching him at deep mid-wicket to give India an early breakthrough.
Despite the early loss, Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings, taking the team to 59 runs by the end of the powerplay. Although Varun Chakravarthy later removed Mitchell in the ninth over, Seifert was joined by the in-form Glenn Phillips to mount a decisive partnership.
Seifert and Phillips put together an 86-run partnership from just 42 deliveries for the third wicket, effectively taking the game away from the visiting side. Seifert was eventually dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy after scoring a stellar 93 runs, which included key contributions before he played on.
Glenn Phillips remained at the crease to finish the match, scoring an unbeaten 65 runs. In the process, Phillips recorded his fourth half-century of the series and broke the record for the most runs scored by a single batter in a bilateral T20I series, reaching a total of 341 runs.
New Zealand completed the chase in the 18th over, reaching their highest ever T20I successful run chase against India with seven wickets in hand and 12 balls to spare. Earlier in the match, India posted a total of 191 for 8 in their 20 overs, anchored by half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer.
Adam Milne starred with the ball for New Zealand, claiming figures of 4-19 across his four overs to restrict the visitors. Despite the loss in the final match, India claimed the overall series victory 3-2, having won the first three encounters before dropping the final two games.
