New Zealand Defeats India by Seven Wickets in Final T20I
Despite a stellar batting performance by India, New Zealand secured a comfortable consolation victory at Seddon Park to close the series.
New Zealand defeated India by seven wickets in the fifth and final T20I at Seddon Park on Sunday, successfully chasing down a target of 192 in just 17.4 overs. Although New Zealand claimed a dominant win to secure a consolation victory, India clinched the overall five-match series 3-2.
The hosts' successful chase was anchored by Tim Seifert, who delivered a blistering knock of 93 runs off 50 deliveries, alongside Glenn Phillips, who remained unbeaten with 65 runs from 38 balls. Seifert's explosive innings included 11 fours and five sixes before he was bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy in the 16th innings.
Phillips continued his stellar form throughout the series, completing his fourth fifty during the match to join an elite group of batters with four or more scores of 50-plus in a single bilateral series. New Zealand reached the target comfortably with seven wickets in hand, rounding off their innings at 194/3 in 17.4 overs.
Earlier in the match, India was put to bat first and managed to post 191/8 at the end of their 20 overs. New Zealand bowler Jacob Duffy opened the bowling effectively, conceding just two runs in the very first over of the match.
India suffered a rocky start after losing early wickets, dropping to 19/2 as bowler Adam Milne and his teammates applied pressure. However, captain Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan rescued the innings with a crucial 93-run partnership for the third wicket.
Ishan Kishan contributed 61 runs from 32 balls, featuring five fours and five sixes, while Shreyas Iyer added 50 runs off 23 balls with three fours and four sixes. Additional lower-order contributions from Naman Dhir, who scored 33, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who added 22, helped push India toward the 200-run mark.
New Zealand bowler Adam Milne proved to be the pick of the bowling attack, claiming 4 wickets for 19 runs to restrict the world champions from surpassing 200 runs. Blair Tickner and Nathan Smith also picked up multiple wickets to help contain the visitors' batting lineup.
Despite late wickets by the New Zealand bowling attack, India's total of 191/8 set a competitive target that ultimately fell short against New Zealand's aggressive batting display led by Seifert and Phillips.
