New Zealand Defeats India by Eight Wickets in Final T20I
Tim Seifert stars with a brilliant 93 as New Zealand closes out the series with a convincing win in Hamilton.
New Zealand secured an eight-wicket victory over India on Sunday at Seddon Park in Hamilton during the fifth and final T20I of the series. Despite the loss, India claimed the overall series 3-2 after finishing their innings at 191/8 in 20 overs. The hosts successfully chased down the target in 18 overs, reaching 195/3 thanks to a stellar performance by Tim Seifert.
Put in to bat first after New Zealand won the toss, India experienced a difficult start, dropping to 19/2 within the first few overs as openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson fell cheaply to the bowling of Adam Milne. However, captain Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan rescued the innings with a crucial 93-run partnership for the third wicket.
Kishan played an aggressive knock, scoring 61 runs off 31 deliveries with five fours and five sixes, while Iyer contributed 50 runs off 23 balls before both batters fell. Later in the innings, Naman Dhir added 33 runs and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 22. India finished at 191/8, with Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav remaining unbeaten at the close of the 20th over after Adam Milne claimed four wickets for 19 runs.
In response, New Zealand made light work of the 192-run target, powered by Tim Seifert's explosive 93 off 50 balls. Seifert capitalized on early fielding lapses from the visitors, helping the Black Caps comfortably overhaul the total with two overs to spare and finish the series on a high note.
The match also sparked discussion regarding team selection and squad rotation. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan questioned the decision to include 36-year-old veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the lineup instead of giving valuable international exposure to younger fast bowlers such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, especially with the T20 World Cup not immediately approaching.
Reflecting on the match and the broader series, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that the team's fielding performance left room for improvement, noting that dropped catches and misfields required introspection. Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed satisfaction with his team's strong finish to the series after dropping the opening matches.
