New Zealand Defeats India in Fifth T20I as Series Concludes
New Zealand secured a seven-wicket victory in the final match after India had already clinched the T20I series.
New Zealand concluded its T20I series against India with a seven-wicket victory in the fifth and final match held at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Despite dropping the final fixture, India claimed the series after winning the first three encounters, while the hosts managed to avoid a whitewash following an 87-run win earlier in the fourth T20I.
During Sunday's final match, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a notable performance under pressure, notching a quickfire half-century in just 22 deliveries. After reaching his milestone in the 12th over against New Zealand pacer Nathan Smith, Iyer celebrated by introducing the popular New Zealand greeting known as the Mana Wave, a gesture that gained worldwide attention during the Paris Olympics.
The match also featured high-voltage drama during the seventh over bowled by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner. Indian batsman Ishan Kishan lofted a delivery toward long-on, prompting Kiwi fielder Finn Allen to execute a spectacular leaping effort near the boundary rope. Allen appeared to complete an acrobatic catch by tossing the ball back into play after jumping near the boundary, initially sparking celebrations among the New Zealand squad.
However, the on-field umpires referred the play to third umpire Chris Brown for a thorough review. Replays and multi-angle split-screen footage demonstrated that Allen's right foot had touched the ground outside the boundary line before he released the ball back into the playing field. Consequently, the third umpire ruled the catch illegal, granting Kishan a reprieve.
Kishan went on to score 61 runs off 32 balls, featuring five sixes and five fours. Despite his efforts and Iyer's half-century, New Zealand successfully chased down the target to seal the win in Hamilton. New Zealand's lineup for the match featured key contributions from players such as Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell, who helped anchor the home side.
Cricket fans in India followed the action live through the Sony Sports Network and its streaming platform, Sony LIV. Meanwhile, broadcasters around the world provided coverage of international cricket fixtures, including the simultaneous Pakistan and Sri Lanka ODI tri-series final taking place at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
