ZDF Adjusts Television Schedule to Honor Late Producer Regina Ziegler
The German public broadcaster alters its prime-time lineup following the passing of trailblazing film producer Regina Ziegler at the age of 82.
The German public broadcaster ZDF announced significant schedule adjustments to honor the legacy of pioneering film producer Regina Ziegler, who passed away in Berlin at the age of 82. Ziegler, recognized as Germany's first independent female film producer, left behind an influential career spanning more than five decades, during which her company produced over 500 television and film projects.
As part of the tribute, ZDF shifted its prime-time programming on Monday evening, replacing the scheduled crime thriller "Der Geier - Blut und Zweifel" with the comedy film "Familie Bundschuh - Bundschuh gegen Bundschuh." The replacement carries a direct connection to the late producer, as the successful series has been produced by Ziegler Film since 2015. The postponed thriller was moved to a later, unannounced broadcast date, though it remains available on the network's streaming platform.
Additional changes reached into the late-night hours. Early Tuesday morning, the network broadcast the 1979 feature film "Fabian," adapted from the novel by Erich Kästner. Directed by Ziegler's late husband Wolf Gremm, the production marked her very first major project with the station.
ZDF plans further memorial broadcasts throughout the week, including repeats of the detective series "Kommissarin Heller" and the historical two-part drama "Die Holzbaronin." Other public broadcasters also paid tribute, with ARD and WDR making acclaimed projects like "Martha Liebermann - Ein gestohlenes Leben" and "Weißensee" available through their online streaming libraries.
Tributes poured in from across the cultural and political landscape following news of her passing. ZDF Intendant Norbert Himmler praised her artistic strength and unshakeable optimism, stating that the network lost an extremely close and valued partner. WDR Intendant Dr. Katrin Vernau highlighted her role as a visionary who influenced culture, society, and politics well beyond the screen.
Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Wolfram Weimer described her as one of the most successful figures in the German film industry. Author Sebastian Fitzek, whose novels were frequently adapted by Ziegler, remembered her as a loyal confidante and an inspiring companion whose passion and dedication to perfection left a lasting mark.
Founding her production company in 1973, Ziegler broke barriers and earned numerous accolades throughout her career, including an Emmy Award, the German Film Award, and the prestigious Grimme-Preis. Since 2000, she managed the company alongside her daughter Tanja, cementing a profound family and industrial legacy in European media.
