ZDF Alters TV Schedule to Honor Late Producer Regina Ziegler
The German broadcaster adjusts its primetime lineup following the death of pioneering film producer Regina Ziegler at the age of 82.
German public broadcaster ZDF has announced sweeping schedule changes to pay tribute to veteran film producer Regina Ziegler, who passed away in Berlin on Sunday at the age of 82. Ziegler was widely recognized as a trailblazer in the German film industry, having established her own production company in 1973 as the country's first independent female film producer.
During a career spanning more than five decades, Ziegler was responsible for over 500 television and film productions. Her unexpected death prompted an outpouring of grief and respect from colleagues, network executives, and cultural officials across Germany.
To honor her memory, ZDF replaced its originally scheduled crime drama "Der Geier – Blut und Zweifel" during primetime with the comedy "Familie Bundschuh – Bundschuh gegen Bundschuh." The replacement film holds personal significance, as the successful series has been produced by Ziegler Film since 2015.
ZDF Intendant Norbert Himmler praised the late producer in a statement released by the network, saying, "In Regina Ziegler, we are losing a close, long-standing, and highly appreciated partner. Her artistic strength and unwavering optimism will be deeply missed."
The network's tribute continued late into the night with the broadcast of "Fabian," a 1979 feature film adapted from the novel by Erich Kästner. The project marked Ziegler's first major work for ZDF and was directed by her late husband, Wolf Gremm.
Other networks also acknowledged her profound impact on German culture. ARD and WDR made several of her acclaimed projects available on their streaming platforms, while ARD Program Director Christine Strobl noted that Ziegler did not merely tell stories, but made them possible.
ZDF plans to air further commemorative programming throughout the week, including repeat broadcasts of the crime series "Kommissarin Heller" and the historical drama miniseries "Die Holzbaronin."
