Wrong-Way Driver Causes Multi-Vehicle Crash on A3 After Turning Around in Traffic
A 54-year-old driver attempting to bypass a traffic jam caused a major collision involving multiple cars and a hazardous materials truck on the A3 in Franconia, injuring several people.
A 54-year-old motorist triggered a severe wrong-way collision on the A3 autobahn in Franconia on Monday morning after executing a U-turn to avoid a traffic jam. According to police reports, the sequence of events began around 4:50 a.m. when a truck collided with a disabled vehicle and its trailer parked on the shoulder near Pommersfelden, resulting in seven minor injuries and a significant backup.
Trapped in the resulting congestion near Höchstadt-Ost, the female driver from the Erlangen-Höchstadt district decided to turn her vehicle around and travel in the wrong direction. She drove for more than five miles against oncoming traffic. An approaching police cruiser responding to the initial accident managed to swerve out of the way at the last possible second, narrowly averting a head-on collision.
Despite the close call, the motorist continued driving the wrong way until she crashed into two passenger cars and a semi-truck carrying a tank. The force of the impact forced the heavy truck into the central concrete barrier, where it came to a rest. Debris was scattered across a 200-meter stretch of the highway, and flying parts caused damage to at least one additional vehicle.
Emergency services rushed to the scene between Erlangen-West and Höchstadt-Ost to treat the wounded. Authorities confirmed that the wrong-way driver sustained moderate injuries, two other motorists suffered light injuries, and the driver of the semi-truck was seriously injured. All four casualties were transported to area hospitals for medical evaluation.
The collision caused significant environmental hazards because the tractor unit's fuel tank ruptured, spilling large amounts of diesel fuel onto the roadway and into the drainage system. Although the semi-truck's attached tanker was empty at the time of the incident, it remained uncleaned, prompting a wide-ranging safety perimeter and a complex recovery operation involving a crane.
Law enforcement officials secured the driver's license and ordered a blood draw at a hospital as part of the ongoing investigation. The prosecution has also brought in an accident reconstruction expert to analyze the exact sequence of events. Officials estimated the total property damage to be in the high six-figure range.
Beyond the rescue and recovery efforts, police had to contend with disruptive behavior from curious motorists. Authorities reported that within a span of just thirty minutes, officers stopped and penalized ten drivers who used their mobile phones to film the accident scene as they drove past.
Due to the extensive cleanup, vehicle recovery, and road repair work, the affected section of the A3 toward Würzburg experienced total closures stretching into the afternoon. Traffic was diverted at the Erlangen-West interchange as police and fire crews worked to clear the debris and secure the site.
