Car Drives Into Group in Germany, Prompting Police Fire and Arrests
Five people sustained injuries after a vehicle was deliberately driven into a crowd in Neustadt am Rübenberge, with investigators pointing to potential clan crime links.
Late Monday evening in Neustadt am Rübenberge, located northwest of Hanover in the German state of Lower Saxony, a car was deliberately driven into a group of people, injuring up to five individuals. Police officers who were nearby conducting a routine traffic check witnessed the incident shortly before midnight near the local fairground and opened fire on the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.
According to a police spokesperson, between four and five people suffered injuries ranging from light to severe. All victims were transported to hospitals for medical treatment, but authorities confirmed that none of them sustained life-threatening injuries.
The driver and any potential accomplices abandoned the BMW at the scene and fled on foot. Initial searches by numerous heavily armed officers, assisted by a police helicopter and police dogs, failed to immediately locate the fleeing suspects.
However, subsequent developments led law enforcement to the address of the vehicle's registered owner, where three individuals were taken into custody. Investigators are currently working to determine the precise extent of these individuals' direct involvement in the attack.
Law enforcement officials stated that the incident was not a random assault or a terrorist attack. Preliminary findings indicate that the involved parties knew each other and that the group was targeted deliberately. Furthermore, police disclosed that the participants belong to large families that have previously come to the attention of law enforcement in connection with clan criminality.
The Hanover Public Prosecutor's Office has reportedly initiated criminal proceedings for attempted homicide. A reporter on the scene described significant damage to multiple vehicles in the area, noting flat tires, a shattered rear windshield, and visible bullet holes from the police response.
The investigation remains active as forensic teams continue to analyze evidence from the cordoned-off crime scene. Authorities have urged any witnesses with information regarding the incident to contact the Hanover criminal investigation department.
