A 70-year-old car driver died on Monday morning following a severe head-on collision with a semi-truck in Görnitz, a district of Leisnig located in Central Saxony. According to local law enforcement, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. as the motorist was traveling along the S 31 highway.

Police reported that for reasons still under investigation, the driver veered into the oncoming lane of traffic. While driving from Bockelwitz toward Polkenberg in the Görnitz area, his vehicle collided directly with an oncoming semi-truck.

The impact of the crash was catastrophic for the elderly driver. Authorities confirmed that he sustained fatal injuries and tragically passed away at the scene of the accident before emergency personnel could save him.

In contrast, the driver of the semi-truck escaped the collision without physical injuries. Law enforcement identified the truck driver as a 39-year-old man who was left unharmed by the sudden impact.

Local police estimated the total property and vehicular damage resulting from the collision to be approximately 90,000 euros. The severe financial damage reflects the intense nature of the impact between the passenger automobile and the heavy commercial vehicle.

The accident and subsequent cleanup operation caused significant disruptions to local transportation. While initial reports from authorities varied slightly regarding the exact duration of the road closure—with estimates ranging from six and a half to about seven and a half hours—the roadway was fully shut down for an extended period.

Authorities explained that the lengthy closure was necessary not only to conduct the initial police investigation and clear the wreckage, but also to address environmental hazards caused by the incident. Specifically, emergency crews had to manage and clean up automotive fluids that leaked onto the pavement during the crash.
