As families across Mexico and beyond prepare for the annual Day of the Dead celebrations, many are also making space to honor their deceased animal companions. According to popular tradition, the souls of dogs, cats, and other pets return to visit their homes and partake in special offerings every October 27.

Although traditional celebrations prominently feature November 1 for the Day of the Innocents and November 2 for the Faithful Departed, recent years have seen the widespread adoption of specific dates dedicated to different types of souls. Popular custom places the return of animal companions on the night of October 26 or throughout the course of October 27.

To properly welcome these furry family members back, caretakers typically set up the altar before midnight on October 27. The tradition involves arranging photographs, fresh water to quench their thirst, favorite foods like kibble or treats, and cherished toys that remind families of the time shared together in life.

To help guide the spirits back home, families scatter bright orange marigold petals, known as cempasúchil, and light candles to illuminate the path. This practice ensures the returning souls do not lose their way and can safely reach the offerings prepared in their honor.

The integration of pets into Day of the Dead altars reflects deep cultural roots. In ancient Mesoamerican beliefs, dogs played a crucial role as spiritual guides for souls traveling to the Mictlán, the underworld. While historical burial practices often included dogs to protect and guide their owners, modern households increasingly include pets as central members of the family deserving of remembrance.

For many people, dedicating an altar to a pet is a meaningful way to cope with grief and celebrate the lasting bond of love. Relatives often spend significant care selecting items that capture a pet's unique personality, ensuring that the memory of their loyal companionship remains alive year after year.
