Santos Loses Álvaro Barreal to Injury for Final Stretch of Brazilian Championship
The Argentine versatile player suffered a hamstring injury following a defeat to Red Bull Bragantino, while the club secures contract renewals and youth agreements.
Santos faces a significant obstacle in the closing stages of the Campeonato Brasileiro after Argentine player Álvaro Barreal was diagnosed with a severe thigh injury. Medical examinations performed after the team's 2 to 1 defeat against Red Bull Bragantino revealed a tear in the biceps femoris of his right thigh. The injury occurred during the second half of the match in Bragança Paulista, forcing him to leave the pitch prematurely.
The club has not disclosed an exact recovery timeline, but the injury is considered extensive. With only four matches remaining in the national competition, Barreal is expected to miss the remainder of the season. The physical demands of his recent matches, combined with his role playing out of position at left-back, mean club officials will likely avoid rushing his rehabilitation.
Barreal's absence creates a tactical challenge for manager Cuca. The 26-year-old had become an important, versatile member of the squad throughout the season, appearing in 46 matches with six goals and one assist while playing across the left flank, wings, and midfield. Fortunately for the team, natural left-back Gonzalo Escobar has recovered from his own injury and is available to return.
In addition to the physical setback, Barreal was already suspended for the upcoming fixture against Coritiba after receiving his third yellow card during the match against Red Bull Bragantino. However, Cuca will welcome back Neymar Jr., who has finished serving a two-match suspension stemming from a red card received against Bahia, alongside midfielder João Schmidt, who was also suspended for the previous game.
Away from the men's senior team developments, Santos confirmed positive news regarding its women's squad, known as the Sereias da Vila. Center-back Ana Alice signed a contract extension keeping her at the club through December 2027. Since arriving in January 2025, the defender has played 52 matches and scored five goals, helping the team secure a promotion back to the national elite division by winning the Série A2 title.
The club also secured the future of its youth ranks by signing 16-year-old Argentine-Brazilian forward Ignácio Pereira to his first professional contract, running until December 2029. Pereira, who has lived in Brazil since he was five years old and previously played for Grêmio and Juventude, has drawn attention for prolific scoring records across several youth categories. He has also received call-ups to Argentina's youth national teams and earned comparisons to compatriot Julián Álvarez.
Santos currently sits in the standings with aspirations of securing a qualification spot for the upcoming Copa Libertadores. The team will return to action on November 18 to face Coritiba away at the Couto Pereira stadium, following the international break for the FIFA date.
