The Argentine national rugby team, Los Pumas, will face Ireland on Friday at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, marking the beginning of their European tour and the fourth round of the Nations Championship. Coached by Felipe Contepomi, the squad aims to secure its first-ever victory on Irish soil, a milestone that has eluded the South American side across 12 previous attempts in Dublin.

The match starts at 5:10 PM local time and will be broadcast on ESPN and Disney+. Both teams enter the fixture with different objectives and challenges as they look to finish the year strong. While Ireland remains a powerhouse in international rugby, they have experienced some defensive inconsistencies and missing personnel, such as Caelan Doris and Jack Conan. Meanwhile, Argentina arrives with a nearly complete squad following a training camp in London, though they are missing injured players like Santiago Carreras and Thomas Gallo.

The historical rivalry between the two nations spans 25 matches dating back to 1952, with Ireland holding 16 victories, eight wins for Argentina, and one draw. Despite Ireland's overall dominance, Los Pumas have famously eliminated the European side in three Rugby World Cups, specifically in 1999, 2007, and 2015. Their most recent encounter in Dublin took place in November 2024, when Argentina came agonizingly close to winning before falling 22-19 following a controversial late refereeing decision.

For this crucial matchup, Contepomi has selected a strong starting lineup that features hooker Julián Montoya, who will earn his 120th international cap and continue to captain the side. The lineup also reunites Santiago Chocobares and Justo Piccardo in the centers, alongside a forward pack that includes Pablo Matera at number eight, Marcos Kremer, and young props Boris Wenger and Francisco Moreno facing off against Ireland's experienced front row of Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, and Tadhg Furlong.

The outcome of Friday's test match will also have implications for the World Rugby rankings. A victory for Argentina by a margin of fewer than 15 points could award them 1.58 ranking points, potentially allowing them to surpass Australia if the Wallabies lose to England. A win by a larger margin would yield 2.37 points. Conversely, a defeat would result in a deduction of ranking points depending on the final score difference.

This fixture represents the first stop in a demanding European stretch for Los Pumas, which will continue in the coming weeks with matches against Italy and France ahead of the tournament's final stage in London. At the same time, the developmental squad Argentina XV is set to play England A at The Rec in Bath, offering more fringe players a chance to showcase their skills on the international stage.
