Germán Berterame aims to earn a spot back on the Mexican National Team
The Inter Miami forward stated that missing the 2026 World Cup squad motivates him to work harder and win over coach Rafael Márquez.
Inter Miami forward Germán Berterame addressed his absence from the Mexican National Team during a recent press conference, emphasizing that missing the 2026 World Cup roster has only driven him to elevate his game. The naturalized Mexican striker acknowledged that squad selections are outside of his control, noting that his sole responsibility is to keep working hard.
Berterame was not among the 26 players chosen by former manager Javier Aguirre for the previous World Cup. Under the new technical direction led by Rafael Márquez, the forward was included in an initial list, but his name was left off the roster for upcoming matches against Jamaica. Despite these setbacks, Berterame stressed that he remains entirely at the disposal of the national squad whenever he is required.
Reflecting on his omissions, the forward maintained an accountability-driven mindset. "If I am not called up for future rosters, it is because I am lacking something and I must improve," Berterame stated. He explained that his primary goal is to make roster decisions difficult for the coaching staff through his performance on the pitch.
Competition for a spot in the Mexican attack remains intense. Players such as Santiago Giménez, Julián Quiñones, Armando González, and Roberto Alvarado are competing for offensive roles, alongside potential returns for Jesús Manuel Corona and Alexis Vega. Additionally, Armando León has emerged as a novel option following a strong scoring run with Croatian club Osijek.
At club level, Berterame expressed enthusiasm about his current situation with Inter Miami, where he plays alongside Lionel Messi. Sharing the pitch with the Argentine icon has provided continuous learning opportunities both on and off the field. Recently, Berterame scored an equalizer following an assist from Messi, helping Inter Miami secure a 2–1 comeback victory over the New England Revolution.
That victory propelled Inter Miami into second place in the Eastern Conference standings and guaranteed the club an automatic qualification spot in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. As the team prepares for the postseason, Berterame aims to maintain his club form to catch the attention of Rafael Márquez and force his way back into international contention.
