Perth Scorchers Defend Low Total to Beat Melbourne Stars by 15 Runs
Sophie Devine starred with four wickets and Chloe Ainsworth delivered a spectacular diving catch to secure the victory.
The Perth Scorchers secured a hard-fought 15-run victory against the Melbourne Stars in the Women's Big Bash League at Junction Oval on November 2. Defending a modest total of 124, the Scorchers delivered an exceptional bowling performance to bowl out the home side for 109 in 18.1 overs, handing Melbourne back-to-back defeats in the tournament.
Sent in to bat first, the Scorchers posted 124/9 in their allotted overs. Despite several batters getting starts, none managed to reach the 20-run threshold. The visitors looked comfortable at 70/2 before suffering a dramatic middle-order collapse, losing six wickets for just 26 runs to slip to 96/8.
Valuable lower-order contributions rescued the innings. Alana King scored 18 runs, Chloe Ainsworth added 16, Beth Mooney contributed 17, and Lilly Mills remained unbeaten on 13 to push the total past the 120-run mark. Sophie Day and Maisy Gibson each claimed two wickets for the Stars.
The Melbourne chase suffered an early blow thanks to a standout defensive highlight from young pacer Chloe Ainsworth. During the fourth over, Ainsworth executed a stunning, acrobatic diving catch off Sophie Devine's bowling to dismiss Amy Jones for 18 runs, providing the Scorchers with a crucial early breakthrough.
Stars captain Meg Lanning tried to stabilize the innings with a top score of 41 off 36 deliveries, which included fighting through the mounting pressure. However, she received minimal assistance from the rest of the batting lineup as the Perth bowling attack tightened its grip on the match.
Sophie Devine spearheaded the bowling effort for Perth, earning Player of the Match honors after finishing with brilliant figures of 4/19. Alana King supported her effectively by capturing three wickets, while Georgia Prestwidge added a late 13 runs for Melbourne before the side was completely bowled out.
With this victory, the Scorchers recorded their second consecutive win of the season. Looking ahead, Perth will travel to face the Sydney Thunder in Sydney on November 5, whereas the Melbourne Stars will look to rebound when they meet the Sydney Sixers in Melbourne on November 6.
