The Adelaide Strikers began their Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) season with a solid 21-run victory against the Melbourne Stars at Karen Rolton Oval. Playing in her 100th WBBL match, South African opening batter Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a brilliant 70 runs off 50 deliveries, helping the home side post a competitive total.

The Strikers entered the contest without premier pace bowlers Megan Schutt, who was suspended due to a prescription medication breach, and Darcie Brown, who was sidelined with a back injury. Despite missing their main pace weapons, the Strikers managed to construct an imposing total of 2-185 in their allotted 20 overs after being put in to bat.

Wolvaardt combined with Maia Bouchier for an opening stand before Bouchier fell for 30. Following Wolvaardt's dismissal in the 18th order by Kim Garth—after being brilliantly caught by Annabel Sutherland—captain Tahlia McGrath and Madeline Penna unleashed a late-innings blitz. McGrath finished unbeaten on 43, while Penna delivered a quickfire 36 not out from just 13 balls, smashing four boundaries and three sixes to help plunder 42 runs from the final two overs.

In response, the Melbourne Stars mounted a strong chase, driven by an aggressive 77-run opening partnership between Rhys McKenna and captain Meg Lanning. McKenna top-scored with 40 runs from 31 balls, while Lanning contributed 32. At 1-79, the visitors appeared well-positioned to chase down the 186-run target.

However, leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington shifted the momentum decisively in the ninth over. Wellington trapped Lanning leg-before-wicket and quickly dismissed Amy Jones for two. Wellington finished her spell with impressive figures of 3-28, dismantling the middle order and sparking a collapse that the Stars could not recover from.

Adding to the bowling success, English spinner Sophie Ecclestone produced a standout moment in the field, claiming a stunning one-handed catch to remove Jones. Ecclestone also contributed 2-25 with the ball, while Eleanor Larosa took 2-23 to apply the squeeze on the visiting batting lineup.

Despite a handy late cameo of 32 from Naomi Stalenberg, the required run rate eventually took its toll on Melbourne. The Stars lost seven wickets and finished their innings at 7-164, falling 21 runs short of the target and handing the Strikers a winning start to their season.

In another WBBL fixture on the opening weekend, the Perth Scorchers secured a dominant nine-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades. After restricting the Renegades to 6-136 behind bowling spells from Chloe Ainsworth and Fatima Sana, the Scorchers cruised to victory in 13.3 overs, led by an unbeaten 58 from captain Beth Mooney and 47 not out from Sophie Devine.
