Rohit Sharma Faces Multiple Milestones Ahead of India's ODI Tour of New Zealand
The star Indian batter enters the five-match series with several records in sight, while former players weigh in on his prospects.
India star batter Rohit Sharma is preparing to chase a series of significant individual milestones as the national team approaches its upcoming five-match One Day International series against New Zealand, which begins on November 4. The tour opens at Eden Park in Auckland, with subsequent matches scheduled in Wellington, Hamilton, and Mount Maunganui, concluding on November 15. The series serves as vital preparation for the upcoming 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, giving senior players an opportunity to solidify their form in challenging overseas conditions.
Sharma stands on the cusp of multiple historical records during the tour. If he scores a century, he will become the oldest player to record an ODI hundred on New Zealand soil and only the fourth Indian player to register centuries across all four SENA nations, which include South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia. Furthermore, he requires only 36 more runs to reach the milestone of 5,000 ODI runs as an opener in SENA countries.
The experienced opening batter is also known for his prolific six-hitting ability. Needing just two more sixes to claim the record for the most ODI sixes against New Zealand, Sharma could also become the first opener in international cricket to hit 600 total sixes if he manages six maximums during the series. Additionally, reaching eight sixes would make him the first opener to hit 200 international sixes specifically against SENA teams.
When compared to teammate Virat Kohli, who enters the series just four runs shy of 600 total ODI runs in New Zealand, analysts have noted distinct tactical roles for the two senior batsmen. Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara suggested that Kohli, batting at number three, might have a better opportunity to secure a century due to his role as an anchor. In contrast, Sharma usually bears the responsibility of providing an aggressive start during the powerplay, though conditions in New Zealand could prompt a shift in strategy.
Pujara also warned that the series could present unique challenges for the visitors, pointing out that India plans to field different squad combinations across the first three matches and the final two fixtures. Because of this rotation, Pujara believes New Zealand holds a slight advantage for the latter half of the series, adding that weather interruptions like rain could also play a factor.
Beyond international duties, Sharma's domestic leadership has also drawn attention. Reports indicate that the Mumbai Indians franchise is discussing a potential return for Sharma to the team's captaincy ahead of the Indian Premier League season, following three difficult years under Hardik Pandya's leadership. Former India captain Kris Srikkanth voiced support for Sharma's return to the role, suggesting that reinstating him could help stabilize the franchise after a disappointing ninth-place finish in the 2026 season.
