Palmeiras Defeats Vasco in First Leg of Copa do Brasil Semifinals
Maurício scored the winning goal for Palmeiras, while Vasco protested a controversial non-call penalty and a late red card.
The Palmeiras secured a 1-0 victory over Vasco on Sunday afternoon at Nubank Parque in São Paulo during the first leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinals. With this result, the Alviverde team enters the upcoming return leg in Rio de Janeiro with a slight advantage, needing only a draw to secure a spot in the tournament final.
Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira made tactical adjustments by starting Maurício in place of Andreas Pereira, a decision that paid off in the first half. After a strong early effort with scoring opportunities from Flaco López and Giay, the home side broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Following an individual play by Arias, Marlon Freitas delivered a precise deep pass to Maurício, who finished calmly past goalkeeper Léo Jardim.
Despite controlling much of the first half and creating additional threats, including a goal-line clearance by Vasco defender Paulo Henrique, Palmeiras struggled to maintain its offensive creativity after the interval. The second half saw a more aggressive visiting side searching for an equalizer.
The match featured significant refereeing controversy involving official Anderson Daronco, which drew strong complaints from the Vasco squad. Early in the second half, at the fourth minute, the visitors appealed heavily for a penalty kick when a ball crossed into the box struck the arm of Palmeiras defender Barboza during a challenge with Lescano. Daronco reviewed the play in his judgment and allowed play to continue, determining no penalty occurred.
Commenting on the incident, Grupo Globo refereeing analyst PC Oliveira stated that Vasco was denied a legitimate penalty kick. According to Oliveira, the contact warranted a penalty that the referee ultimately chose not to award.
Vasco's challenges mounted later in the second half when defender Saldivia received his second yellow card and a subsequent red card in the 32nd minute after a foul on Vitor Roque, forcing the team to finish the match with ten men. Despite trailing, Vasco created chances, including a one-on-one opportunity by Cuiabano that went wide of the net.
The decisive second leg is scheduled for the following Sunday at São Januário stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of this semifinal matchup will advance to face either Grêmio or Atlético-MG in the final, which will be played as a single match at Arena Mané Garrincha in Brasília.
