Palmeiras and Estudiantes Set for 2026 Copa Libertadores Final
The two powerhouse clubs will square off in Montevideo after dramatic semifinal penalty shootout victories.
The stage is officially set for the 2026 Copa Libertadores final, where Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras will square off against Argentine club Estudiantes de La Plata. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, at the historic Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, in a single-game showdown that will crown the top club in South America.
Palmeiras secured its place in the title match following a tense semifinal battle against Fluminense. After finishing the second leg tied 2-1 on aggregate following a goal by Fluminense's Hércules, the match was decided by a penalty shootout. Palmeiras triumphed 5-3, with goalkeeper Carlos Miguel making a critical save on Nonato's attempt before Marlon Freitas slotted home the decisive kick to send the Brazilian squad to its eighth final appearance.
On the other side of the bracket, Estudiantes punched its ticket to Montevideo by pulling off a remarkable feat against Flamengo at the Maracanã. Despite playing a man down from the fifth minute of the second half due to the expulsion of Baltasar Rodríguez, the Argentine side held firm through a scoreless regulation. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera emerged as the hero in the ensuing penalty shootout, stopping three attempts to seal a 3-2 victory.
Reflecting on his red card, Rodríguez expressed both personal remorse and immense gratitude toward his teammates. "It was tough, it hurts a lot personally, but it is an enormous joy for the team. I thank the team, they saved me from my screw-up," Rodríguez stated outside the team hotel. Head coach Alexander Medina praised his players' grit, noting that the squad endured an exhausting match and a sleepless night following their hard-fought triumph.
Both finalists have guaranteed themselves a significant financial payout from CONMEBOL, with the runners-up set to pocket at least $7 million. The ultimate champion will receive a $25 million reward on top of earnings accumulated throughout the earlier stages of the tournament.
As Palmeiras chases its fourth continental title, Estudiantes is aiming for its fifth championship trophy, looking to claim its first title in 17 years. The final also carries historical weight for regional dominance, as Brazilian clubs have captured the last seven consecutive tournament trophies, while Argentina seeks to halt that streak and claim its 26th overall title in the storied competition.
