Palmeiras secured a 1-0 victory over Vasco da Gama on Sunday at Nubank Parque in São Paulo during the first leg of the 2026 Copa do Brasil semifinals. The crucial win gives the team coached by Abel Ferreira a valuable advantage as they seek a spot in the national tournament's final.

The game's only goal came in the 24th minute of the first half. Midfielder Maurício finished firmly into the corner past goalkeeper Léo Jardim after receiving a well-placed pass from Marlon Freitas, who had been set up by Jhon Arias.

Throughout the opening half, Palmeiras maintained greater offensive volume and created multiple scoring opportunities. Flaco López and Agustín Giay both came close to extending the lead, while Vasco struggled to generate significant danger despite holding spells of possession.

In the second half, Vasco returned with a more aggressive approach and created chances to equalize. Midfielder Adson tested the defense early on, and the visiting side later appealed for a penalty following a potential handball by defender Alexander Barboza inside the area, though referee Anderson Daronco allowed play to continue.

The match grew increasingly tense as both teams fought for control. Vasco's task became significantly harder in the 33rd minute of the second half when defender Saldivia received his second yellow card and was sent off after a foul on Vitor Roque.

Despite having a numerical advantage for the remainder of the fixture, Palmeiras was unable to capitalize further. The hosts pressed through late attempts by Andreas Pereira and Vitor Roque, but the scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle.

With the result, Palmeiras will advance to the final with a draw in the return leg. The decisive match is scheduled for November 8 at Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro, where Vasco will need a victory by at least two goals to secure qualification in regulation time.

Ahead of the second leg, both clubs will return to domestic league action in the Brasileirão. Palmeiras is set to host Remo, while Vasco travels to face Athletico in upcoming midweek fixtures.
