Palmeiras secured its spot in the Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday night after defeating Fluminense 5-3 in a penalty shootout at the Nubank Parque in São Paulo. The match concluded with a 2-2 aggregate score following a 1-0 victory for Fluminense in regulation time, courtesy of an 81st-minute goal by Hércules.

Fluminense entered the second leg trailing 2-1 from the initial encounter at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Needing a win to stay alive, the visiting side increased the pressure in the second half. Young substitute Wesley Natã initiated the decisive play that allowed Hércules to find the back of the net and level the series, forcing the match straight to penalties.

In the ensuing shootout, Palmeiras proved flawless from the spot. Maurício, Gustavo Gómez, Ramón Sosa, Joaquín Piquerez, and Marlon Freitas all successfully converted their attempts. For Fluminense, Thiago Silva and Hércules scored, but goalkeeper Carlos Miguel guessed correctly and blocked the fourth attempt taken by Nonato, handing the advantage back to the hosts.

Marlon Freitas stepped up to convert the final kick, sealing the victory and sending Palmeiras to the continental showcase for the second consecutive year. Goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, who also emerged as a hero during the quarterfinal shootout against LDU Quito, praised his teammates after the match. "I can only thank my teammates. We managed to kick the penalties in the best possible way," the goalkeeper stated.

Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira deployed a conservative tactical approach, allowing Fluminense to control possession for long stretches while relying on defensive discipline and counterattacks. Despite absorbing significant pressure, the Portuguese coach’s strategy ultimately yielded the desired result, putting him one step closer to his third Copa Libertadores title after previous triumphs in 2020 and 2021.

The victory marks the eighth time Palmeiras has reached the final in its history, and the fourth under Ferreira's leadership. Last season, the team reached the final but fell to Flamengo. Fluminense, meanwhile, exited the tournament despite a valiant effort, with team captain Thiago Silva expressing pride in his squad's performance away from home.

The decisive match for the continental trophy is scheduled for November 28 at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay. Palmeiras will face the winner of the semifinal series between defending champions Flamengo and Estudiantes de La Plata, as the club pursues its fourth title in the tournament.
