Martha Stewart Apologizes After Homeless Halloween Costume Triggers Backlash
The lifestyle mogul faced widespread criticism online after sharing a photo of herself dressed as an unhoused person while promoting a commercial product.
Lifestyle personality and author Martha Stewart has issued a direct apology after facing severe online backlash over a controversial Halloween costume that depicted an unhoused person. The 85-year-old television personality shared a since-deleted photograph on Instagram showing her wearing tattered clothing, a beanie, and dark makeup smeared on her face to mimic dirt. In the image, she held up a clipboard with the handwritten message, "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!"
The post quickly drew intense criticism across social media platforms like X, Reddit, and Instagram. Commenters labeled the outfit tone-deaf, grotesque, and morally insensitive, pointing out the juxtaposition of a wealthy celebrity portraying extreme poverty while simultaneously using the post to promote a commercial collection of scented candles. Critics argued that the costume mocked vulnerable populations experiencing economic hardship and hunger.
Initially, Stewart removed the image and defended the outfit through a statement provided to Page Six. She stated that she was "distressed" that people were offended, explaining that her intention was to bring awareness to the serious crisis of homelessness. She highlighted her past support for charities and her commitment to social causes, maintaining that she never meant to cause upset.
However, as the public outcry continued to grow, Stewart recognized that her initial explanation fell short. Just hours after her first remarks, she returned to Instagram to post a much stronger and more direct apology acknowledging her mistake. "It's hard to admit when you've really screwed up. My earlier statement didn't go far enough," she wrote.
In her second statement, the lifestyle mogul directly addressed the economic struggles faced by many Americans, admitting that her choice of costume was completely inappropriate. "I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry," she wrote. She later added in comment sections that her design was meant to bring the plight of the hungry to mind, though she acknowledged she failed to properly communicate that intent.
The public reaction remained mixed following her second apology. While some fans defended her and suggested the mistake was simply an underbaked joke from an enthusiastic holiday dresser, others expressed disappointment. Prominent figures, including actress Indya Moore, criticized the rationale, pointing out that marginalized communities should not be used as caricatures for holiday entertainment.
Halloween has long been a staple of Stewart's public brand, with the entrepreneur regularly sharing elaborate costumes, seasonal recipes, and hosting tips with her audience. Earlier in the weekend, she had shared other festive content, including an Olympics-themed appearance on the Today show alongside host Craig Melvin. Representatives for Stewart have not provided further comment on the incident.
