Authorities Warn Parents After Needles Found in Halloween Candy

Police in multiple cities are investigating reports of sewing needles and metal objects hidden inside children's Halloween treats.

Police are urging parents to thoroughly inspect their children's Halloween candy after multiple reports surfaced of sewing needles and sharp metal objects being hidden inside treats. The alarming discoveries occurred during the Halloween weekend celebrations as children returned home from collecting sweets in various neighborhoods.

In the Esslingen district, local authorities received a report on Halloween night from two families in Filderstadt-Bonlanden. After examining their children's haul, parents discovered needles inserted into two milk and hazelnut snack bars. According to police, the foreign objects were placed from the outside in a manner that made them invisible upon initial inspection, noting that consumption would have likely resulted in injuries.

A mother from Filderstadt voiced her outrage on social media, writing that it is unbelievable someone would endanger the health and lives of children. Another social media post highlighted a separate, similar incident in Esslingen involving a piece of fruit gum pierced with a needle, though that specific case had not yet been officially reported to law enforcement by Sunday afternoon.

The Reutlingen Police Headquarters, which holds jurisdiction over the Esslingen district, has appealed to families in the Filderstadt area to carefully examine or discard their children's collected sweets. Investigators have asked witnesses and affected individuals to report any suspicious items or provide tips regarding the unknown perpetrator to the Filderstadt police precinct.

Similar alarming incidents occurred in Nuremberg and Landshut. In the western part of Nuremberg, parents discovered needles inside chocolate bars while unpacking treats on the night of All Saints' Eve. Meanwhile, authorities in Landshut reported that parents found screws concealed inside chewable candies and chocolate bars.

Fortunately, no children were injured in any of the reported incidents, as attentive parents discovered the dangerous items before the snacks could be consumed. Police departments in the affected regions have launched active investigations into the tampering cases.

While concerns regarding tampered Halloween treats have persisted for decades—with historical fears often centering on poisoned sweets or hidden razor blades—confirmed incidents of foreign objects remain relatively rare. Law enforcement continues to advise communities to remain vigilant and meticulously check all collected confectionery before allowing children to eat them.
