Lionsgate Greenlights Animated John Wick Prequel With Keanu Reeves

Lionsgate has officially given the greenlight to an untitled animated prequel film in the billion-dollar John Wick franchise, with actor Keanu Reeves signed on to reprise his signature role as the iconic assassin. The studio confirmed the development during an earnings call, advancing a project that has spent the better part of three years in various stages of development since franchise mastermind Chad Stahelski first teased it in late 2023.

The animated feature will transport audiences back in time before the events of the original 2014 film to chronicle the infamous "Impossible Task." Throughout the live-action franchise, characters frequently reference this seemingly insurmountable mission, which Wick successfully completed to fulfill his obligations to the High Table and earn his freedom so he could retire with the love of his life, Helen.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shannon Tindle, known for his work on Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings, will direct the animated project. The screenplay is penned by Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo, who previously developed screen stories for major studio blockbusters. Nathan Kahane serves as executive producer.

The production brings back the core creative team behind the live-action blockbusters. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee will produce for Thunder Road, alongside Chad Stahelski for 87Eleven Entertainment and Keanu Reeves. They are joined by Point Grey, adding another experienced animation production studio to the ongoing expansion of the universe.

Franchise leadership has previously emphasized the unique creative opportunities that animation offers the gritty, action-heavy world of John Wick. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate's motion picture group chair, noted when the project was first introduced that both animation and the John Wick mythos offer endless possibilities, highlighting the Impossible Story as the narrative fans have requested most.

The animated prequel represents just one facet of Lionsgate's broader strategy to expand the universe. Other ongoing developments in the franchise include a fifth live-action film, a spinoff focused on the character Caine portrayed by Donnie Yen, and a television series tentatively titled John Wick: Under the High Table with Robert Levine serving as showrunner.

Lionsgate has not yet announced a formal release date for the animated prequel, and additional plot details remain closely guarded. Production is currently underway in the pre-production stage as the creative team prepares to bring the legendary hitman's past to life through animation.
