Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Her Challenging Role in The Batman Part II
The acclaimed actress revealed that her mysterious character in the upcoming DC sequel caused her significant existential angst.
Scarlett Johansson has broken her silence regarding her involvement in Matt Reeves' highly anticipated superhero sequel, The Batman Part II. While the actress remains tight-lipped about the exact identity of the character she will portray, she recently admitted that cracking the role proved to be a uniquely difficult endeavor.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johansson compared her upcoming franchise commitments and noted that her role in the Batman universe pushed her significantly further out of her comfort zone than her other upcoming projects. She explained that the character gave her a considerable amount of existential angst and proved very hard to figure out.
“It was very hard to figure out,” Johansson told Entertainment Tonight. “I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or where I’m in my life or what’s going on, but it was just like hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it. It was a tough role in a lot of ways.”
Because DC Studios has not yet officially confirmed details regarding her character, moviegoers and comic book fans have circulated various rumors and theories. Speculation has pointed to several prominent figures from the source material, with many guessing she might play Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent. Other unconfirmed theories suggest she could potentially be portraying Poison Ivy, Andrea Beaumont, or another classic Gotham City resident.
If the speculation surrounding Gilda Dent proves accurate, the complex psychological demands of the character could help explain Johansson's comments. In the famous DC Comics story arc The Long Halloween, Gilda stays with Harvey Dent after he transforms into Two-Face and ultimately becomes a serial killer known as the Holiday killer. Portraying such a fractured psyche would present a heavy challenge for any performer.
Production on the superhero sequel has experienced recent shifts behind the scenes. Director Matt Reeves temporarily stepped away from filming to attend to a family matter, prompting filmmaker Steven Soderbergh to step in and help complete the final stages of principal photography in the United Kingdom. Reeves is expected to resume full duties as the film moves into post-production.
Despite the production adjustments, the studio has maintained its release schedule. The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to open in theaters on February 18, 2028.
