Lionsgate Announces Animated John Wick Prequel Featuring Keanu Reeves
The upcoming project will explore the legendary assassin's past and his completion of the Impossible Task.
Lionsgate has officially greenlit an animated prequel to the John Wick franchise, confirming that Keanu Reeves will return to voice the titular character. The project, which is currently in preproduction, aims to delve into the backstory of the legendary assassin before the events of the original 2014 film. Fans will finally see the depiction of the "Impossible Task" that allowed John Wick to sever his ties with the High Table and pursue a life with his wife, Helen.
The production team behind the project includes several key figures from the live-action film series, such as producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, as well as director Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment. They are joined by Point Grey Productions, a company co-founded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The screenplay for the prequel is being written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo, known for their work on Marvel’s Eternals.
Directing duties have been assigned to Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shannon Tindle, whose previous credits include Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings. Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting that the animation medium offers unique possibilities for the franchise. "There is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the 'Impossible Task.' Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation," Fogelson stated.
While the specific animation studio has not yet been named, the project is expected to lean into an aesthetic similar to anime. Chad Stahelski has previously highlighted the influence of anime on the John Wick series, suggesting that the medium is a natural fit for expanding the franchise's mythology, character development, and action sequences. This animated feature serves as the latest expansion for the series, which continues to grow through various spin-offs and potential future installments.
Beyond the animated prequel, the John Wick universe remains active. A spin-off film centered on the character Caine, played by Donnie Yen, has finished production, and a television series titled John Wick: Under the High Table is also in development. Additionally, the studio continues to explore the possibility of a fifth live-action movie. While the fourth film concluded in a way that seemed to finalize the character's journey, producers have indicated they are actively working on a story concept that could satisfy fans and justify a return to the big screen.
In addition to his film projects, Keanu Reeves is set to appear as the iconic assassin in an upcoming video game developed by Saber Interactive. The title, which is planned for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox X|S, and PC, promises to incorporate signature elements of the franchise, including its distinct "gun fu" combat style and immersive environments. As the franchise continues to branch out across different media, Reeves remains a central figure in defining the future of the John Wick legacy.
