India Takes 3-0 Series Lead Over New Zealand After Record-Breaking T20 Win
Abhishek Sharma and teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi powered India to a six-wicket victory in Wellington with a historic opening partnership.
India secured a dominant six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20 international in Wellington on Tuesday, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a target of 199, India reached 199 for four in just 13.2 overs, driven by a record-breaking performance from their batting lineup.
Opening the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered a stellar performance after shifting back to the top of the order. Following a low-grade right adductor strain sidelining Ishan Kishan, the teenage left-hander made the most of his opportunity by smashing 45 runs off just 19 balls.
Sooryavanshi and Sharma tore into the New Zealand bowling attack from the very first over, putting together a blistering 133-run partnership for the first wicket. Their aggressive approach propelled India to 118 without loss during the powerplay, establishing a new record for the highest powerplay total by a Full Member nation in Men's T20 internationals.
Although Sooryavanshi fell just short of a half-century when he was caught by Daryl Mitchell off Matthew Fisher's bowling, his contribution set a strong foundation for the run chase. The opening pair recorded the highest run rate for a 100-run partnership in T20I history at 18.13, eclipsing previous benchmarks.
At the other end, Abhishek Sharma produced a historic innings, scoring 113 runs off only 38 deliveries. Sharma reached his century in 35 balls, setting a record for the fastest T20I hundred against New Zealand and the fastest in matches played in New Zealand. His explosive knock included nine fours and 11 sixes, earning him the Player of the Match award.
The victory also allowed Sharma to surpass Virat Kohli as the Indian batter with the most centuries across all T20 cricket, bringing his career total to 11. Furthermore, India recorded the joint-fastest team fifty by a Full Member team in Men's T20Is, reaching the milestone in just 14 balls.
Earlier in the match, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 198 for three in their 20 overs, led by an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls from Daryl Mitchell. However, the bowling attack had no answer to India's aggressive batting display, as the visitors comfortably chased down the target with nearly seven overs to spare.
