India Defeats New Zealand in Thrilling First T20I as Abhishek Sharma Sets World Record
Indian opener Abhishek Sharma made history in Christchurch by setting a new world record for hitting the first ball faced for a six in T20I matches.
India secured a dramatic four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening match of the five-match T20I series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday. Despite facing a daunting target after the hosts posted a formidable total, the Shreyas Iyer-led visiting squad delivered a stellar batting performance to chase down the score.
Opening batter Abhishek Sharma highlighted the match by setting a unique world record, becoming the player with the most sixes hit off the very first ball faced in T20 Internationals. Facing his first delivery off the final ball of the first over, Sharma sent a wide, full delivery from Matt Henry soaring over the cover boundary. This marked the seventh time Sharma has accomplished the feat, moving him past Afghanistan's Shafiqullah Shinwari, who has done so six times.
Sharma's aggressive knock lasted just 12 balls, yielding 29 runs with three sixes and two fours before he was dismissed by Michael Bracewell. Together with partner Sanju Samson, Sharma built a blistering 93-run opening partnership in just 5.5 overs. This milestone stood as their fifth 50-plus opening stand in 2026, tying them with previous elite Indian pairs for the most in a calendar year.
New Zealand had earlier set a challenging total of 225/8, representing their highest ever T20I score on home soil and the joint-highest total ever recorded against India in the format. Glenn Phillips led the charge with an unbeaten 82 off 40 deliveries, while Finn Allen contributed 45 runs from 24 balls to pressure the Indian bowling attack.
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, India's bowlers struggled to contain the hosts on the pace-friendly pitch. Five Indian bowlers conceded 40 or more runs in an innings for the first time in a T20I match, with Axar Patel finishing as the most expensive bowler by giving up 51 runs in his four overs.
Following Sharma's departure, Sanju Samson maintained the offensive momentum with a quick 67 off 33 balls. After a brief wobble in the middle order that saw the quick dismissals of Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the chase with a crucial 45-run partnership.
Naman Dhir ultimately sealed the victory for the visitors with an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls, helping India successfully navigate the stiff target and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
