India Secures T20I Series Against New Zealand With Dominant Win
An explosive opening partnership and a stellar bowling performance led India to a six-wicket victory in Wellington.
India secured a 3-0 lead in the five-match T20 international series after defeating New Zealand by six wickets at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 199 runs, the visiting side reached the goal in just 13.2 overs, largely driven by a historic opening partnership.
After Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, New Zealand posted a total of 198/3 in their 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell anchored the hosts' innings with an unbeaten 89 runs from 52 deliveries, featuring five boundaries and five sixes, alongside Finn Allen who contributed 40 runs.
Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh proved to be the most effective bowler for India during the first innings. Arshdeep conceded only 33 runs and claimed one wicket in his four-over spell, removing Tim Seifert early in the match with a delivery that angled across the right-hander.
Despite early swing from India's pace attack, New Zealand's batters capitalized on the small side boundaries at the Wellington venue. Partnerships between Mitchell and Allen, followed by a late push from Bevon Jacobs, who finished with 39 not out, pushed the hosts to a competitive total.
India's response was swift and record-breaking. Opening batters Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi launched an aggressive counterattack, amassing 118 runs in the powerplay alone to set a new record for the highest powerplay score in a Men's T20I match between Full Member teams.
Abhishek played a phenomenal knock, scoring 113 runs from just 38 deliveries with 11 sixes, completing his century in 35 balls. Sooryavanshi provided strong support with 45 runs from 19 balls, as the pair put together a 133-run opening stand in just 7.1 overs.
Although New Zealand picked up a few late wickets after the explosive opening stand, the chase remained well under control. India comfortably sealed the victory by six wickets with plenty of balls to spare, successfully wrapping up the series with two matches remaining.
