India Defeats New Zealand by Six Wickets to Secure T20 Series
Abhishek Sharma smashed an unbeaten century off 38 balls to lead India to a convincing victory in Wellington.
The Indian cricket team secured a comprehensive six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20 match held on Tuesday at the Henry Stadium in Wellington. Winning the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field, noting the team needed to adapt quickly to the conditions. The victory gave India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
New Zealand put up a challenging total of 198 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell played a stellar, unbeaten innings of 89 runs from 52 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and eight sixes. Finn Allen added 40 runs off 25 balls, while Bevan Jacobs contributed an unbeaten 39 runs from 23 deliveries to help bolster the hosts' total.
India's bowling attack faced sustained pressure during the innings, particularly in the opening half where New Zealand reached 100 runs in the first ten overs. Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy managed to claim one wicket each, while experienced pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Prince Yadav went wicketless.
In response, India chased down the 199-run target in just 13.2 overs, finishing at 199 for 4. The chase was spearheaded by opening batsman Abhishek Sharma, who delivered a historic performance by scoring a century off just 35 balls. Sharma finished with 113 runs from 38 deliveries, striking nine fours and eleven sixes at a remarkable strike rate.
Young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi also played aggressively, scoring 45 runs from 19 balls with four fours and four, while Tilak Verma and Naman Dhier guided the team safely to the target. Earlier in the match, India was forced to make a lineup adjustment as Ishan Kishan was ruled out due to an injury, allowing Suryavanshi to step into the playing eleven.
New Zealand made three changes to their squad for the encounter, bringing in Matthew Fisher, Kyle Jamieson, and Adam Milne to replace Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Nathan Smith. Despite the changes and a strong batting performance led by Mitchell, the New Zealand bowling attack struggled to contain Sharma's explosive innings.
With this victory, India maintained its dominant run in New Zealand, clinching the series with two matches remaining. The two teams will continue the five-match series as New Zealand looks to bounce back in the upcoming fixtures.
