India wrapped up its five-match T20I series against New Zealand with a seven-wicket loss at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, November 1. Having already claimed the series by winning the first three encounters, India finished the contest with a 3-2 victory overall, despite dropping the final two games.

In the series finale, India batted first and set a target of 191 runs for the loss of eight wickets. New Zealand comfortably chased down the total in response, reaching 192 with seven wickets in hand and two overs to spare. The victory was anchored by standout performances from the New Zealand batting lineup, as India struggled to contain the hosts on true surfaces.

Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar faced sharp criticism from former all-rounder Irfan Pathan regarding his inclusion in the squad. Pathan argued that selecting the 36-year-old bowler was a mistake by the selectors, given that the T20 World Cup is far away and the matches could have provided valuable international experience to younger fast bowlers such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav.

Reflecting on Bhuvneshwar's performance in the fifth match, Pathan noted that the experienced pacer was somewhat unlucky and conceded that his skills are unquestionable. Across four appearances in the series, Bhuvneshwar claimed a single wicket while conceding runs at an economy rate above 11.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir chose to focus on the positives of the tour, praising captain Shreyas Iyer for leading an inexperienced bowling attack under challenging overseas conditions. Iyer successfully captained the side to three consecutive victories early in the series, successfully chasing down targets of 226, 181, and 199.

However, Gambhir acknowledged the immense challenges faced by the bowling unit, noting that no Indian bowler finished the series with an economy rate under nine runs per over. The team's struggles in the field were compounded by missed opportunities, including a dropped catch in Hamilton that allowed New Zealand to capitalize and secure the win.

Looking ahead, India's schedule features a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka at home, which is set to begin on December 22. The coaching staff and selectors will evaluate player performances from the New Zealand tour as they continue preparations for future international tournaments.
