New Zealand Prepares for ODI Series Against India Following T20 Finale
As the attention of both teams shifts from the recent T20I series finale to the upcoming one-day internationals, players and coaches look forward to crucial preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
New Zealand and India are quickly turning their attention to the upcoming ODI series following the conclusion of their five-match T20I campaign in Hamilton. The final T20I saw New Zealand claim a comfortable seven-wicket victory, largely powered by Tim Seifert, who smashed 93 runs off 50 balls to help chase down India's target of 192. Despite India winning the series overall, New Zealand finished strongly by securing victories in the final two matches.
Looking ahead to the upcoming ODI matches, New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy shared his thoughts on facing his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate, Virat Kohli. Duffy praised Kohli's exceptional work ethic and his surprising humility despite holding a massive status in Indian cricket. Having shared a dressing room with Kohli during the Indian Premier League, Duffy noted that the veteran batsman was approachable and welcoming to overseas players.
Duffy mentioned that his conversations with Kohli in the nets provided valuable tactical insights regarding various pitches across India. "We talk about certain wickets back in India. Certain wickets are quite different, so he talked a lot about the different lines and lengths on those kinds of wickets and how he adjusts and how he thinks I could be adjusting on those ones too," Duffy stated during a media interaction.
The New Zealand pacer also highlighted the significance of the upcoming ODI matches as vital preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. Describing ODI cricket as one of his favorite formats, Duffy pointed out the challenging balance between dealing with swinging balls early on and handling the heavy-hitting phases later in the innings. With the global tournament roughly a year away, players from both sides view these fixtures as crucial stepping stones to cement their spots in their respective national squads.
Meanwhile, the recent T20 series offered both squads an opportunity for experimentation and reflection. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged that while his team finished strong with a 2-3 series scoreline, they would ultimately rue small missed moments in the opening games that could have shifted the outcome. On the Indian side, captain Shreyas Iyer pointed out that the team's fielding standards require introspection after committing several dropped catches throughout the shorter format series.
As international schedules continue to demand intense commitments from players across formats, the transition to the ODI series begins immediately. Both teams enter this next phase aiming to refine their strategies, integrate players, and build long-term momentum ahead of major international tournaments.
