Veteran Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns for India's New Zealand Tour
Cricket experts and opponents highlight the fast bowler's potential impact ahead of the five-match T20I series opener in Christchurch.
Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to feature in the opening T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch on October 22, marking his return to international cricket after a four-year absence. The 36-year-old pacer last represented India in November 2022 and was recently named in the squad following a strong performance in the Indian Premier League, where he finished as the second-leading wicket-taker with 28 dismissals to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru claim their second title.
Kumar's international comeback was nearly realized during the fifth T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru, but continuous rain washed out the fixture, keeping his return on hold. Now, management and analysts expect the conditions in New Zealand to suit his bowling style, which relies heavily on movement in the air and off the pitch.
Test legend Cheteshwar Pujara emphasized that New Zealand is an ideal location for the veteran seam bowler to operate with the new ball. "In New Zealand, he should be the first choice with the new ball, based on the conditions, because of the skill he possesses of swinging the ball," Pujara remarked on JioHotstar's 'Out or Not Out'. "If the ball won't swing in New Zealand, where else will it swing? The conditions there are ideal for him."
Former batter Subramaniam Badrinath shared a similar sentiment on his YouTube channel, suggesting that a strong performance in this series could position Kumar for a potential spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad. Badrinath noted that the team management should coordinate with the bowler regarding his physical readiness to handle a 50-over workload leading up to the tournament in South Africa.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner also acknowledged the threat posed by the returning Indian pacer ahead of the opening match at Hagley Oval. "I think Bhuvi will love these conditions in New Zealand. If there's anything in the wicket, he'll find something out of it," Santner said. "[Even] on some flat ones in India, still manages to nip the ball and swing the ball. So with the new ball out here especially, he'll be a challenge."
The upcoming fixture marks the beginning of a demanding 12-match tour for India across New Zealand, featuring five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests stretching until December 1. Shreyas Iyer will captain the T20I side, while Shubman Gill will take charge of the ODI and Test squads as India aims to secure its first Test series victory in the country since 2009.
