Fatal Semi-Truck Collision on the A2 Highway Causes Major Disruptions
A multi-vehicle crash involving heavy concrete elements blocked traffic toward Vienna and prompted a multi-hour emergency response.
A serious traffic accident on the A2 southbound highway in Austria resulted in one fatality and left another person injured on Monday morning. The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. at kilometer marker 77.4 between Zöbern and Krumbach in the Neunkirchen district.
According to provincial police, a semi-truck carrying heavy concrete elements slowed down after the driver noticed an impact on the front of his vehicle. Shortly thereafter, a following tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of the loaded truck. The force of the impact was severe, trapping the 63-year-old driver of the rear vehicle.
Emergency medical personnel arriving at the scene could only confirm the death of the trailing truck driver. The driver of the front truck, identified as a 47-year-old from the Güssing district, sustained undetermined injuries and was airlifted by the Christophorus 3 emergency rescue helicopter to the hospital in Wiener Neustadt.
The accident caused significant gridlock, completely closing the highway's lanes heading toward Vienna. Authorities reported that traffic backups stretched for several kilometers, prompting transportation officials to set up detours. Traffic was diverted at Pinggau onto the B63 and B54 routes, while motorists traveling from Graz and Klagenfurt toward Vienna were advised to utilize the Semmering mountain route.
Cleanup operations proved challenging for emergency crews, who had to clear scattered concrete debris and remove sections of the safety guardrail before the heavily damaged vehicles could be towed. Josef Huber of the Aspang fire department stated that the complex operation would take several hours.
The incident also highlighted ongoing concerns regarding emergency access corridors. The Austrian motoring club ÖAMTC reported that motorists failed to properly form a rescue lane as traffic began to back up, making it extremely difficult for emergency vehicles to reach the crash site.
While initial reports from organizations like the ÖAMTC suggested that the highway closure would persist well into the afternoon or evening, local authorities worked diligently to clear the thoroughfare and restore normal travel conditions for motorists in the region.
