Ciara Mageean, European Champion and Irish Olympian, Dies at 34
The celebrated middle-distance runner passed away following a battle with stage four bowel cancer, just weeks after her wedding.
Ciara Mageean, the former European 1500m champion and two-time Olympian who became one of Ireland's most celebrated runners, has died at the age of 34. Her family announced that she passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, surrounded by her loved ones, following a battle with stage four bowel cancer.
A statement shared on her social media channels expressed deep grief, reading, "At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed." Tributes quickly poured in from across the global athletic community, honoring her resilience, kindness, and remarkable sportsmanship.
Born in Portaferry, Northern Ireland, Mageean built an extraordinary athletic career. She represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Games. Although she missed the 2012 London Games due to a serious ankle injury and was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics on the eve of her heat because of an Achilles injury, her determination on the track remained unwavering.
The pinnacle of her career arrived in June 2024 at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. In a thrilling 1500m final, she navigated a gap through the leading pack to secure the gold medal in 4:04.66. With this victory, she became only the second individual Irish European athletics champion in history, following Sonia O'Sullivan, and completed a full set of European medals after earning bronze in 2016 and silver in 2022.
Mageean also captured a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and held multiple Irish national records, spanning the 800m, 1,000m, 1500m, and the mile. Her fierce competitiveness was paired with deep humility and an engaging personality that endeared her to fans and competitors alike.
In May 2025, Mageean publicly shared her stage four cancer diagnosis, approaching the illness with the same tenacity she brought to her athletic pursuits. Despite undergoing grueling treatments and participating in an endurance challenge in Costa Rica for television, she maintained her characteristic grace. She spoke openly about her appreciation for everyday life and the immense love she held for her family and her long-term partner, Thomas Moran.
Just weeks before her passing, Mageean and Moran were married in a small civil ceremony at Belfast City Hall. Her death brought an outpouring of sorrow from sports organizations and fellow athletes worldwide, cementing her legacy as an enduring inspiration for generations of Irish athletes.
