Sir Ian McKellen Honors Late X-Men Co-Star Sir Patrick Stewart
Following the passing of the legendary actor at age 86, longtime friend and collaborator Sir Ian McKellen shared a heartfelt tribute celebrating his roots.
Sir Ian McKellen has paid a touching tribute to his longtime friend and fellow X-Men co-star, Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away at the age of 86. Stewart's representative confirmed that the iconic stage and screen actor died at his Los Angeles home following a brief battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.
In a statement shared on social media, McKellen reflected on the deep bond the two actors shared over decades of friendship and collaboration. The pair first met as ambitious young actors working with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago and later starred together in the X-Men franchise as Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier.
McKellen emphasized that, above all else, Stewart remained deeply connected to his upbringing in northern England. "Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end," McKellen wrote. He noted that Stewart's accented voice and straightforward demeanor reflected his Yorkshire heritage.
The friendship between the two actors extended far beyond their professional collaborations. McKellen famously tried to persuade Stewart to turn down the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation out of concern that he would lose his footing in the British theater scene. Instead, Stewart took the risk, launching a massive international television and film career while continuing to perform in classic stage productions on both sides of the Atlantic.
McKellen also noted that Stewart's proudest achievement was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. Although America became his adopted home—where he met his third wife, Sunny Ozell—Stewart never forgot his origins.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry following the announcement of Stewart's death. Marvel Studios released a statement and a sneak peek of Stewart's final film performance reprising Professor X in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, praising him as a singular talent and a true gentleman who defined the character for generations of fans.
Stewart's son, actor Daniel Stewart, also honored his father online by pinning a photograph from their 2001 performance together in the play Johnson Over Jordan at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Fans and colleagues continue to remember the legendary actor for his immense contributions to theater, television, and film.
