Bethesda Announces The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel in Anniversary Video
The long-awaited sequel to Skyrim finally receives an official title and logo during a video celebrating Bethesda's 40th anniversary.
Bethesda Game Studios officially announced the title for the next installment in its prominent role-playing franchise, revealing that the upcoming game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The long-awaited follow-up to 2011's Skyrim was unveiled on Tuesday as part of a retrospective video celebrating the studio's 40th anniversary, hosted by longtime franchise director Todd Howard.
The official confirmation validates months of fan speculation and recent online hints. Last week, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma posted a message about a demo she received over the summer, replacing the subtitle with eight asterisks that exactly matched the eight-letter word Sentinel. In August, rumors were further fueled when former Bethesda writer Michael Kirkbride replied with a simple affirmation to a Reddit user who guessed the name.
The title reveal also included a short teaser featuring a scroll emerging from sand and a cryptic quote attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell. The passage reads, 'The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate,' and is dated 4E 206, which places it five years after the events of Skyrim in the official timeline.
In the lore of the franchise, Sentinel is a major city located within the province of Hammerfell on the continent of Tamriel, strongly suggesting the region will serve as the primary setting for the new title. Hammerfell sits west of Cyrodiil and southwest of Skyrim, and it holds historical significance as the only Empire province to fight off the Thalmor on its own following the White-Gold Concordat.
Despite the excitement surrounding the title and logo reveal, players will have to wait significantly longer before playing the game or seeing actual in-game footage. Bethesda stated that it will be 'some time' before the studio shares further information regarding the project, which was first announced back in 2018.
Industry analysts and reporters indicate that the game is still quite far from completion. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier noted that the title is likely more than two years away from its official launch, leading some observers to speculate that it could arrive around late 2028 as a major release for next-generation hardware.
