Rockstar Details GTA VI Map Size, Release Date, and Gameplay Mechanics
The highly anticipated open-world game launching on November 19 will feature a massive fictional state of Leonida and new progression requirements.
Rockstar Games is preparing for the official release of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. As the release date approaches, developers have shared new insights into the massive scale of the game, its technical specifications, and deliberate design choices aimed at encouraging players to explore the open world rather than rushing through the main narrative.
According to game directors Aaron Garbut and Rob Nelson in an interview with Edge, the game's setting—a fictional state named Leonida inspired by Florida—will be approximately twice the surface area of the map in Grand Theft Auto V. Community estimates suggest that driving across the new map from end to end could take nearly 30 minutes. Furthermore, the main urban center of Vice City, including its suburbs, is reported to be eleven times larger than Los Santos and its surrounding areas.
To ensure the expansive rural and coastal environments do not feel deserted, Rockstar has focused heavily on world-building and accessibility. Players will be able to enter a significantly larger number of interiors, ranging from commercial shops to various buildings across the map, without encountering loading screens. Additionally, the game introduces more than 170 species of animals and detailed NPC behaviors.
Rockstar has also implemented specific design mechanics to prevent players from simply rushing through the story missions. According to the developers, certain missions will require players to wait a specific amount of time or acquire a specific sum of money to proceed. If players lack the required funds, they will need to engage in activities such as robbing establishments, selling vehicles, or utilizing an in-game mobile application called Waink to identify high-value cars and evaluate their security risks.
On the technical side, the game will be limited to 30 frames per second across current console hardware, with no 60 frames per second mode officially confirmed. The PlayStation 5 Pro will feature specific enhancements labeled as PS5 Pro Enhanced, though exact performance details remain limited beyond support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D audio. Digital buyers on PlayStation 5 will be able to begin pre-loading the game on November 12, though file size estimates indicate players will need to reserve a substantial amount of storage space.
For players purchasing physical copies, Rockstar confirmed that the retail version will be distributed as a code-in-box rather than containing a traditional disc with all game data, making network connectivity necessary for installation. Meanwhile, a PC release has not yet been announced, as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the studio prioritizes its core console audience during initial launches before addressing the technical complexities of a PC port.
