Bethesda Announces The Elder Scrolls 6 Title and Setting
The long-awaited role-playing game is officially titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel and will be set in the province of Hammerfell.
Bethesda Game Studios officially announced the official title and logo for its long-awaited role-playing game during a video message from franchise director Todd Howard. Released as part of the studio's 40th-anniversary celebration, the sequel to Skyrim will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The announcement confirms that the game is set in Sentinel, a major city within the province of Hammerfell on the continent of Tamriel.
The reveal follows months of speculation and previous hints from Xbox leadership. Earlier this summer, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma received a live demo of the game and teased the subtitle on social media by using eight asterisks, which matches the letter count of Sentinel. Former Bethesda writer Michael Kirkbride also fueled the rumors online when he replied to a fan's guess with confirmation, though the studio itself maintained silence until now.
The setting of Hammerfell offers a distinct shift from Skyrim's snowy terrain. Located west of Cyrodiil, the province features landscapes ranging from the Alik'r Desert to rugged mountain ranges and coastal settlements. In the lore, Hammerfell is the homeland of the Redguards and possesses a complex political history, having separated from the Empire following the Great War after rejecting a peace settlement with the Aldmeri Dominion.
Accompanying the title reveal, the teaser trailer concluded with a mysterious passage attributed to a Moth Priest named Yazar. The text references a lost future, an undone victory, and the sands of time, hinting that prophecy and fate may play major roles in the narrative. The passage is dated 4E 206, five years after the start of Skyrim, though Bethesda has not yet confirmed the exact timeline for the sequel.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was initially announced more than eight years ago at E3 2018, with production ramping up after the launch of Starfield in 2023. Reports indicate that the early teaser was originally released to soften the critical reception of Fallout 76. Although Xbox leadership recently reviewed a playable demo, industry observers suggest fans will likely have to wait at least a couple more years before the game is released on PC and Xbox.
Following the reveal, Bethesda posted a statement on social media confirming that development is ongoing. The studio noted that while it will be some time before it is ready to share further details, it is pleased to finally share the official name and setting with players worldwide.
