Sony and Microsoft Urge Inactive Console Owners to Sell Hardware

Major gaming companies are encouraging owners of unused consoles to resell them as the industry pushes for higher active user engagement ahead of major upcoming releases.

Sony has initiated a campaign in the United States and Spain inviting owners of PlayStation 5 consoles to sell their hardware if they are no longer actively using it. Multiple users have reported receiving messages from PlayStation proposing trade-ins through platforms like Back Market, with potential valuations reaching up to 400 dollars for systems in good condition that include two controllers.

This strategy mirrors a recent move by Microsoft regarding Xbox Series consoles, where collaborations with retailers like Best Buy encouraged similar resale efforts. Industry analysts note that these unprecedented campaigns aim to put hardware into the hands of more active gamers who purchase a higher volume of titles and digital content, thereby boosting recurring platform revenue.

Company executives have pointed to a maturing hardware market where subscriber growth has largely plateaued. By shifting existing consoles to active players, platform holders hope to increase ecosystem participation and digital transactions, particularly with major upcoming software releases anticipated in the near future.

In parallel with hardware trade-in efforts, Sony continues to update its subscription services. The PlayStation Plus Essential tier recently introduced new titles for subscribers to download, featuring games such as Dead Island 2, the Tomb Raider Darkness Trilogy remastered collection, and the roguelite deckbuilder Monster Train 2.

Meanwhile, upcoming software projects from PlayStation Studios are also generating attention. Firesprite has released new character details for Until Dawn 2, introducing the eight members of the Dead True ghost-hunting team ahead of the narrative-driven horror game's scheduled launch on January 28, 2027.

While the resale outreach has surprised some consumers who view it as drawing a distinction between different tiers of players, industry observers emphasize that maximizing active user monetization has become a central focus for platform holders navigating a shifting technological landscape.
