Athletic Club Defeats Real Sociedad 2-1 in Basque Derby

The Athletic Club triumphed 2-1 over Real Sociedad in a thrilling Basque derby held at San Mamés on November 1, 2026. The home side utilized a strong start and stellar goalkeeping to break a five-game winless streak against their regional rivals, delivering a crucial victory in front of their passionate supporters.

The match began with high intensity, and the hosts quickly put pressure on the visiting defense. In the 13th minute, Iñaki Williams broke the deadlock by attacking the backline and converting a precise pass from his brother Nico Williams with a subtle lob over the goalkeeper. Despite a strong effort from Álex Remiro, the ball crossed the line to give the Bilbao squad the early lead.

Real Sociedad responded before the half-hour mark when Luka Sučić capitalized on a loose ball at the edge of the area, firing a low shot past goalkeeper Unai Simón in the 30th minute. The visitors pushed for a second goal shortly after, but Simón made crucial saves to deny attempts from Ander Barrenetxea and Mikel Oyarzabal, showcasing the form that recently earned him global accolades.

Just before halftime, the home side reclaimed the advantage from the penalty spot. After Jon Aramburu brought down Nico Williams inside the area in the 45th minute, Álex Berenguer stepped up to take the penalty. Although Remiro guessed correctly, the shot slipped underneath his body to make it 2-1 heading into the break.

The second half saw both teams trade opportunities, with Athletic managing their narrow lead through disciplined defending and smart transitions. Real Sociedad pressed forward in the closing stages, creating dangerous chances through Carlos Soler and substitute Orri Óskarsson, but they were unable to beat the resilient Bilbao defense or overcome Simón's performance in goal.

With this result, Athletic Club climbs to the seventh position in the league standings with 15 points. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad remains in fifth place with 17 points, maintaining their standing despite the tough defeat in Bilbao.
