The traditional Spanish La Liga rivalry features historic commemorations, a first-half goal from Luka Sučić, and an intense battle at San Mamés.

Athletic Club and Real Sociedad met on Sunday evening at the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao for a high-stakes fixture in the 11th round of Spain's La Liga. Billed as one of the most traditional rivalries in Spanish football, the Basque derby carried heightened significance this weekend as both teams commemorated the 50th anniversary of a historic moment when their captains first carried the outlawed Ikurriña flag onto the pitch during the Franco era.

The match began with strong attacking intent from the hosts. Athletic drew first blood in the 14th minute when Iñaki Williams found the back of the net following an assist from his brother, Nico Williams, capitalizing on a bright start that saw the home side create several early scoring opportunities.

Real Sociedad, coached by Pellegrino Matarazzo, steadily worked their way back into the encounter and responded through Croatian midfielder Luka Sučić in the 30th minute. Sučić received the ball near the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a precise shot into the bottom right corner of the net, leaving Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón with no chance to save it and tying the score at 1-1.

The visitors continued to press forward, with Ander Barrenetxea testing Simón shortly after the equalizer. However, right before the halftime whistle, Athletic regained the lead when Álex Berenguer converted a penalty kick in the 46th minute, sending the match into the interval with a 2-1 scoreline in favor of the hosts.

Entering the match, Real Sociedad held the stronger league position, sitting in fifth place with 19 points after ten games, driven by a prolific offense that had scored 19 goals. Meanwhile, Athletic entered the fixture with 12 points from nine matches, seeking to reverse a recent head-to-head trend that favored their opponents from San Sebastián in official competitions over the previous year.

Both managers deployed strong starting lineups for the derby. Athletic, under the direction of Edin Terzic, featured key players such as Aymeric Laporte and the Williams brothers, though they faced notable absences including Oihan Sancet and Gorka Guruzeta due to injuries. Real Sociedad relied on captain Mikel Oyarzabal and forward Orri Óskarsson to lead their offensive efforts.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the fixture served as a poignant reflection of Basque identity and history. Fifty years after players like José Ángel Iribar and Inaxio Kortabarria first defied the dictatorship by bringing the regional flag onto the field, the modern team captains recreated the iconic gesture at San Mamés before kickoff, bridging decades of football tradition.
